Due to lockdown, we had to postpone the Scout Environment Camp in July and Mt Keira Scout Camp is booked out a year in advance, so we gave the weekend we had booked for Venturers to the Scouts.
This year, you decide the content you want to explore. Scientists can make lots of amazing discoveries but unless they can communicate their ideas to others, and work with their peers to share and review their findings, then that knowledge can be lost. We are going to explore different environment issues and concepts and then come up with creative ways to share this information with others. Together we can make a difference.
This year’s Venturer Environment Program will consist of 2 parts:
11th & 18th September – Online Skills Workshop
At the skills, workshop Venturers are invited to join the Environment Team in exploring a range of environmental concepts and issues. During the weekend we will work in project patrols to work towards creating an interactive activity that communicates our findings to members of the Scout Section.
26-28th November – Scout Environment Camp
Venturers are invited to present their activity at the Environment Camp as well as participate in parts of the camp program as a patrol of Venturers. This includes activities from external guests include Starrs Planetarium, SES and WIRES.
So how is this going to work?
Given the various COVID restrictions that are in place across our region, the Skills Workshop will be delivered online over the course of two days. Starting at 1pm each day, the workshop will include a combination of presentations, at-home activities, breakout rooms, videos and discussions. Where health orders allow, Venturers are encouraged to team up in person with up to 3 other Venturers from their own or neighbouring Unit to participate in the workshop. Where this is not possible, we can link members up remotely. We are more than aware that many members are spending their weeks studying, learning and working in front of a screen. We are getting our collective minds together to come up with creative ways in making this workshop as interactive as possible. Hopefully we can get together in person in November to present our projects collectively.
What badge work will I complete by participating?
The aim is to work on a project towards an SIA award. While the natural choice here is Environment, the content you select may match better with another area. There are a few hours of work required to complete the workshop, research the topic, prepare the activity and present the activity, so there may be the opportunity to discuss with your Unit the options for more than one award. But hey, don’t just join in for the badgework. Join in to share your knowledge, your love for the outdoors, your interest in the Environment or just to spend some time with the Environment Team!
So how much?
Registration for Venturers will be done as two separate events. The cost for the online workshop weekend is $5 so we can post you through a 2021 Environment Camp badge. There will be a cost for Venturers attending the November camp that covers camping fees, meals and activities. This event will be a separate registration closer to the date.
I need more details than that!
